The AHFME was formed in September, 1983 by the attendees of a conference focused on hospitality financial management at Cornell University. The first meeting thereafter was held at the Sheraton Center in New York City on November 18, 1983. In attendance were George Conrade from the Educational Institute of AH&MA, Joe Cotter, Executive Vice President – Finance from the Sheraton Corporation and chair of the Financial Management Committee of AH&MA, and seven educators, A. Neal Geller (Cornell), Dennis Ferguson (Cornell), James Healey (Fairleigh Dickinson), Charles Ilvento (FIU), Lyell Metcalf (UNLV), Ray Schmidgall (MSU), and Lauren Taylor (University of Maryland, Eastern Shore).
